BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team saved the fireworks for late Friday night with two impressive performances in some of the final events ran on the opening day of the 2013 Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana.
Senior MaryKate Mellen qualified for her second event at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-23) by placing second in the 3,000m run with a career-fast time of 9:54.44. Last weekend, Mellen qualified for the mile run by posting a career-best clocking of 4:54.40 at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
Freshman Zenée Gadson would follow by winning the event title in the triple jump with a tri-leap of 11.13m/36-6.25. The triple jump and 3000m run were scheduled for 9 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. starts, respectively.
Overall, the Cardinals tallied 11 top 10 efforts and 11 career-best performances Friday at the Hoosier Hills Invitational which is schedule to conclude tomorrow. However, Friday was BSU's lone day at the meet as they have no one scheduled to compete in any of tomorrow's events.
The Ball State indoor track & field team will compete in its final tune up before the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships next Friday (Feb. 15), when it hosts the Ball State Quadrangular which also features six-time defending champion Western Michigan, Miami and Northern Illinois. Action is set to get underway at 5 p.m. at the Ball State Field Sports Building.
