MUNCIE, Ind. - - All eight of Ball State's runners finished in the top 10 Friday afternoon at the Muncie Elks Country Club, as the cross country team ran away with the second annual Ball State Invitational title.

Ball State finished first overall with its top five runners scoring 17 points and posting a season-best average time of 18:49.08. Marian finished second with 46 points, while Indianapolis took third at 74.

"On a day where the temperature was chilly, the course was wet and it was raining most of the time, I was really pleased with how our team ran," said head coach Randy Heisler. "What is even more impressive is that our top three runners each scored personal-bests on the afternoon. While it was a great overall race for us, we are still looking forward to getting better as we approach the MAC Championships."

Leading the charge for Ball State's 11th consecutive race was senior MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) who won the meet with a career-fast 5K time of 18:08.70.

Finishing second was BSU sophomore Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind. /New Palestine) with a career-fast time of 18:25.20, while freshman Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) also ran a career-best, placing third overall at 18:29.70.

Rounding out BSU's scored runners were junior Esther Tirado (Dominican Republic/Lafayette Jefferson) in fifth overall with a time of 19:29.90 and senior Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch) placing sixth with a time of 19:31.90.

The Ball State cross country team returns to action next Friday, when it travels to Peoria, Ill., for the Bradley Classic which is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
