Cross Country Takes Third At Butler Opener

   CARMEL, Ind. - - The Ball State cross country team opened the 2014 season by placing third at the Butler Opener Saturday morning at Northview Church in Carmel, Ind.

   Senior Courtney Edon (New Palastine, Ind./New Palastine) led the Cardinals to the finish line, placing fourth overall in the 5K race with a time of 19:19.0.

   IUPUI won the four-team meet with a combined 33 points, while 12th-ranked and host Butler took second with a score of 42. Ball State followed in third with a team score of 61, while Marian placed fourth at 99.

   Overall, the Cardinals collected four top 15 efforts at the meet, with sophomore Jordan Timmons (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) also placing in the top 10, taking ninth at 19:36.4.

   Redshirt junior Madelyn Webster (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) was Ball State’s third-fastest runner, placing 14th at 19:51.8. Freshman Jessica Bryzek (Brownsburg, Ind./Indiana Academy) followed in 15th-place, turning in a time of 19:52.7 in her collegiate debut.

   Rounding out Ball State’s scored runners was senior Caitlynn Edon (New Palastine, Ind./New Palastine) in 24th at 20:21.2.

   The Ball State cross country team returns to action Friday, when  it travels to Athens, Ohio for the Ohio Invitational which is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
