MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University women’s golf and cross country programs were honored Wednesday by the NCAA for earning exemplary marks in the latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Both programs received Public Recognition Awards for their commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes. Ball State had two teams honored for the second straight year, while its cross country team was recognized for the third year in a row.

The awards are based on multi-year APR scores and go to teams whose scores rank in the top 10 percent within their respective sports. This year’s scores are based on the APR from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years. The scores required to be in the top 10 percent ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport.

"Our student-athletes continue to perform at a high level academically, and I want to commend our women's golf and cross country programs on their sustained success in the classroom," Ball State director of intercollegiate athletics Bill Scholl said. "These awards recognize the best of the best within each sport and are earned only by maintaining the highest standards of excellence. It is a tribute to the student-athletes within these programs along with our coaches and support staff."

The Mid-American Conference had a total of 25 programs recognized Wednesday, but only four league schools had more than Ball State’s two award winners. Seventeen women's teams from the MAC were honored with only one school having more recipients than the Cardinals.

The women's golf team was honored for the first time and became the eighth different Ball State team recognized in the 10-year history of the award program. The cross country team has earned the distinction four times, more than any team at Ball State.

Last year, the Ball State women's volleyball team joined the cross country team in being honored. The four awards in the past two years are the most for Ball State over a two-year period since the Cardinals compiled seven over the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. Multi-year APR scores for all Division I teams will be announced May 14.
