CLEVELAND, Ohio - - For the second consecutive season, Ball State senior cross country runner MaryKate Mellen has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team as announced by the league office Monday.
During the 2012 cross country season, Mellen led the Cardinals in all seven meets while also posting four top 10 finishes. She recorded a career-fast 5K time of 18:08.7 to win the Ball State Invitational (Oct. 5), while placing second at the 5K IPFW Invitational (Sept. 14) with a clocking of 18:33.85.
Mellen logged a career-best 6K time of 22:09 to place 93rd at the Great Lakes Regional (Nov. 9), after earning a 29th-place finish at the 6K Mid-American Conference Championship (Oct. 27) with a time of 22:29.0.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
