LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) turned in a 5K time of 18:21.11 to lead the Ball State cross country team to a 30th-place showing in its toughest race of the season Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic.
Battling against some of the nation's top programs, the Cardinals' five scored runners posted an average time of 19:11.02 to score 870 points in the event, topping host Louisville in the 31-team field.
12th-ranked Arizona won the meet with an average time of 17:07.63 and 71 total points, followed by No. 1 Washington (17:09.32; 80), No. 14 Michigan State (17:20.35, 135), No. 10 Arkansas (17:18.40, 135) and No. 17 Penn State (17:23.17, 161).
Freshman Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) was the Cardinals second-best runner at the Louisville Classic with a time of 18:53.01.
Also scoring for the Cardinals were sophomore Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind. /New Palestine) with a time of 19:15.69, senior Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch) with a career-fast clocking of 19:26.54 and sophomore Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) with a time of 19:58.72.
Freshman Kelly Swift (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) also ran for the Cardinals, finishing the course in 20:32.67.
The Ball State cross country team returns to action Friday, when it hosts the Ball State Invitational at the Muncie Elks Country Club. The women's 5K race will begin at 4:30 p.m., while a men's 5K will follow at 5 p.m.Ball State Individual Results:
