BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - The Ball State cross country team opened the 2012 season with a fourth-place showing at the 5K Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener hosted by Bowling Green Friday evening.

Two-time defending Mid-American Conference champion Toledo won the five-team meet with 19 points from its top five runners, while Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Ball State all finished within three points of each other at 71, 72 and 74, respectively. Madonna placed fifth with 150 points.

"Our girls ran a pretty good race for this course and the windy conditions we encountered today," said Ball State head coach Randy Heisler. "Overall, I am happy with our results. For the first time since I have been here, we had five girls run within a minute of each other. To have a pack mentality is big for us. It is the next step in our evolution."

Pacing the Ball State pack was senior MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) with a time of 19:05.60 to place ninth overall. Freshman Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) turned in BSU's  second best time in her collegiate debut with a 12th-place clocking of 19:18.50.

Also scoring for the Cardinals were sophomore Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) with a time of 19:38.60 (16th), senior Emilee Zets (Berlin Center, Ohio/West Branch) with a time of 20:04.20 (18th) and senior Allison Blanck (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) with a time of 20:05.90 (19th).

Also running for the Cardinals were sophomore Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) with a time of 20:15.50, freshman Kelly Swift (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) with a time of 20:24.30 in her first collegiate meet and junior Esther Tirado (Dominican Republic/Lafayette Jefferson) with a time of 20:40.20.

The Ball State cross country team returns to action Saturday, Sept. 8, when it travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., for the 2012 IPFW Invitational.
