MUNCIE, Ind. - - After a two-week hiatus, the Ball State cross country team returns to action Saturday, when it travels to Louisville, Ky., for the 2011 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
The event features six total races, including three 5K women's heats and three 8K men's events. The Cardinals are slated to compete in the Women's Gold Race which is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. A total of 30 teams will compete in the gold race, along with several unattached runners.
Highlighting the Cardinals competition in the gold race are Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan, as well as in-state foes Purdue and Southern Indiana. The host Louisville Cardinals are also entered in the race.
Saturday's meet will be the third of the year for Ball State, which placed sixth among 21 teams at the annual Indiana Intercollegiates which were hosted by Indiana Sept. 16. At the meet, the Cardinals were led by junior MaryKate Mellen for the second straight meet, as she placed 28th time of 18:59
Freshman Courtney Edon followed close behind with a 29th-place effort of 19:00. Senior Madeline Goheen placed 36th with a time of 19:10, while redshirt junior Christine Talhelm (54th; 19:39) and sophomore Esther Tirado (60th; 19:48) also scored for the Cardinals.
