OXFORD, Ohio - - Paced by a sixth-place time of 19:04 from junior MaryKate Mellen, the Ball State cross country team opened its 2011 campaign with a second-place finish at the 5K Miami Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The hosts RedHawks won the event with 19 points, including a 1-2-3 finish, followed by the Cardinals (49) and Wheeling Jesuit (65).
In her collegiate debut, freshman Courtney Edon turned in a seventh-place time of 19:12, while senior Madeline Goheen rounded out BSU's top-10 performers, with a 10th-place time of 19:25.
Also scoring in the meet for the Cardinals were freshman Madelyn Webster (12th; 19:30) and redshirt junior Christine Talhelm (14th; 19:41).
Other BSU runners include; freshman Caitlynn Edon (21st; 20:02), redshirt sophomore Emilee Zets (24th; 20:17), sophomore Esther Tirado (26th; 20:26), junior Allison Blanck (27th; 20:34), sophomore Tiffany Cange (29th; 21:05) and senior Thekla Lorenz (34th; 22:18).The Cardinals return to action Saturday, when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Intercollegiate.
