MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State cross country head coach Randy Heisler announced the team's seven-meet schedule for the 2011 season Thursday afternoon. Highlighting the list is a pair of meets hosted by the Cardinals at the Muncie Elks Country Club, including the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships.
"The goal of this year's schedule was to run a number of competitions with other MAC schools." said Heisler. "Over the past few years, we have run meets on courses we were going to see later in the season and not necessarily against league teams. This schedule gives our young team the ability to grow and experience some success versus teams in our conference before we host the MAC Championships."
The Cardinals open their 2011 campaign with four straight road meets starting Sept. 2 at the Michigan Open. Ball State will also travel to the Miami Invitational (Sept. 10), the Indiana Intercolleagiates (Sept. 16) and the Greater Louisville Classic (Oct. 1).
On Oct. 14, BSU will host the Ball State Invitational which will feature both a women's (4 p.m.) and a men's (4:45 p.m.) race at the Muncie Elks Country Club. The event marks the first time the Cardinals have hosted a scored regular season meet since the Sept. 18, 1992 Ball State Invitational. BSU did host a non-scored exhibition contest at the beginning of the 2009 season.
Two weeks later, the Cardinals host the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships at the same Muncie Elks Country Club course. Once again, the event will feature both a men's (11 a.m.) and a women's (Noon) race. Ball State last hosted the MAC Championships in 1996, finishing fifth out of the 10-team field.Following the MAC Championships, BSU will compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Toledo (Nov. 12). If the team or an individual advances from the regional, they will compete at the NCAA Championships (Nov. 21) in Terre Haute, Ind.
