Cross Country Places 24th At Great Lakes Regional

   TOLEDO, Ohio - - With three runners placing in the top 130 of a 227-runner field, the Ball State cross country team ended its 2011 season with a 24th-place finish among 33 teams at the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships Saturday afternoon at Toledo's Ottawa Park Golf Course.

   The Cardinals finished the race with 674 total points and beat out Mid-American Conference rivals Kent State (26th/717) and Bowling Green (33rd/1044).

   Michigan won the meet with a score of 45 points, which included the first and second-place individuals. Michigan State placed second at 77, while Toledo (84), Wisconsin (91) and Notre Dame (112) rounded out the top five teams.

   Junior MaryKate Mellen led the Ball State charge, placing 90th overall with a time of 22:26.0. Also placing in the top 130 for BSU were freshman Courtney Edon (128th/22:59.0) and senior Madeline Goheen (22:59.3).

   Ball State's other scored runners were redshirt junior Christine Talhelm in 159th (23:36.9) and sophomore Esther Tirado in 168th (23:53.9).

   Redshirt sophomore Emilee Zets (180th / 24:11.3) and junior Allison Blanck (184th / 24:16.9) also competed in the meet for the Cardinals.
