MUNCIE, Ind. - - Behind a fifth-place finish from junior MaryKate Mellen, the Ball State cross country team placed second among five teams at the 2011 Ball State Invitational hosted at the Muncie Elks Country Club.
Western Michigan won the women's 6K meet with a team score of 30 points, followed by the Cardinals (54), Miami (64), Kent State (70) and Bowling Green (140). In the men's 8K race, Kent State took home top billing with 17 points, followed by Bowling Green at 45.
"I was really pleased with our team's effort today," said Ball State head coach Randy Heisler. "We finished second among the five teams and ran a competitive race heading into the MAC Championships. I am really excited for our team. Coach Bishel has done a great job getting them ready leading up to the conference meet and I thought they competed really well today."
In the Cardinals' first 6K race of the season, Mellen turned in a career-best time of 22:41.8 take home fifth place overall and help BSU team runner-up honors as a team. Also finishing in the top 10 for Ball State with BSU career-best efforts were senior Madeline Goheen (22:53.5) and freshman Courtney Edon (22:58.7).
Also running for BSU at the meet were redshirt sophomore Emilee Zets (23rd; 24:00.1), junior Allison Blanck (24th; 24:03.3), freshman Caitlynn Edon (24:30.7), freshman Madelyn Webster (24:47.3) and senior Thekla Lorenz (25:11.1).The Ball State cross country team returns to action Saturday, Oct. 29, when it hosts the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships at the Muncie Elks Country Club. The women's 6K race starts at 11 a.m., while the men's 8K event begins at noon.
