Ball State University selected Tom Collins as its director of intercollegiate athletics Jan. 9, 2006.

Collins inherited a Ball State 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program with a rich tradition in academic and athletic success. The tradition has continued under Collins guidance.

Following are some of the highlights of Collins' tenure at Ball State:

  • Ball State has had five student-athletes receive Academic All-America honors, including Briggs Orsbon, a senior on the 2011 football team who was named to the First Team and owns a 4.0 grade-point average on Ball State's 4.0 scale.
  • Directed the completion of the Scheumann Stadium renovation
  • Put in place a new five-year gender equity plan.
  • In 2007-08, Ball State won the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Championship, the MAC West Division in women's basketball and tied for the MAC West title in football.
  • Ball State's football team advanced to the International Bowl after the 2007 season, only the fourth Football Bowl Subdivision Bowl Game in school history.
  • In 2008-09, Ball State's football team won the MAC West Division, competed in a second straight bowl game and finished the regular season with a 12-0 record and reached as high as 12th in the national rankings.
  • The 2009 softball team claimed its first-ever MAC Championship
  • The 2008-09 women's basketball team tallied a 71-55 win over two-time defending national champion Tennessee in the first round of the school's first ever NCAA Tournament berth after winning the MAC West Division and the MAC Tournament.
  • Also in 2008-09, the baseball team and men's basketball program shared the MAC West Division Championships.
  • In 2010, Ball State's softball team won a second straight Mid-American Conference Championship, won the MAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regional for only the second time in school history and the first time since the 1998 season.
  • In 2010-11, Ball State's women's volleyball team won the MAC Championship, and in 2011-12 the women's volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
  • To begin the 2011 football season, Ball State hosted Indiana University at Lucas Oil Stadium, and over 40,000 fans witnessed a 27-21 win by the Cardinals.
  • Oversaw the completion and dedication of the Briner Sports Complex, which includes competitive facilities for field hockey, women's soccer and women's track and field.
  • In 2008-09, Ball State athletics was recognized by the Mid-American Conference with the league's Institutional Academic Achievement Award, which recognizes the school with the highest men's and women's student-athlete grade-point average among the MAC institutions in those sports sponsored by the conference. Ball State managed an overall GPA of 3.057 in the 2008-09 academic year to win the award.

Prior to taking the position at Ball State, Collins served the previous 20 years in several capacities in the athletics department at Arizona State University, including the last five in the department’s number two position as the senior associate athletic director.

Collins’ resume includes working for some of the most recognizable names in intercollegiate athletics. While at Arizona State, he worked with athletic directors Dick Tamburo, Kevin White and Gene Smith (currently the A.D. at Ohio State). Collins also worked with athletic director Sam Jankovich, while at the University of Miami, and his colleagues through the years include Bill Moos, Jim Livengood, Herman Frazier, Michael Alden, Sandy Hatfield Clubb and Vic Cegles.

During his tenure at Arizona State, he oversaw seven nationally ranked Division I-A programs, helped direct a collegiate licensing program that generated annual revenues in excess of $450,000, and created the department’s Addy Award-winning "Playing with Fire" marketing slogan.

Prior to being named to his senior associate A.D. position at Arizona State, Collins served as the university’s associate athletic director, overseeing corporate and community affairs, and as assistant athletic director. He also worked as assistant athletic director at the University of Miami and as the ticket manager at Washington State.

Career Achievements 
* Supervised the completion of a $12 million renovation to Ball State’s Scheumann Stadium.
* Implemented a new five-year gender equity plan for the Ball State athletics department.
* Supervised seven nationally ranked NCAA Division IA sport programs at Arizona State in 2000-01.
* Assisted with moving Arizona State football game vs. LSU to Tempe, Ariz., and raising $1.256 million for Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
* Managed a collegiate licensing program with annual revenues in excess of $450,000, and a ticket operation with revenues of $8.5 million while at Arizona State.
* Supervised external areas, including Sun Angel Foundation, major gifts, media relations, development, annual fund campaign, marketing, promotions, ticket sales and Varsity "A" Association while at Arizona State.
* Served as department liasion with Adidas, Viacom Outdoor Sports Marketing and the Arizona State Bookstore.
* Served as tournament director for numerous NCAA tournaments in basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, gymnastics, track and field and golf.
