Jay Newberry completed his fifth year as an assistant coach at Ball State for head coach Billy Taylor in 2012-13. He previously served for two years as the Cardinals' director of basketball operations.

Newberry played an integral role in helping the Cardinals finish among the top-3 in the Mid-American Conference West Division five straight years, including one divisional co-championship.

He has been part of Taylor's staff at Ball State that has coached nine all-conference selections and five MAC All-Freshman Team members.

The Cardinals finished 15-15 in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. The 2012-13 team closed the regular season with wins in seven of its last eight games to claim the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament.

In 2010-11, the Cardinals posted a 19-13 overall record, marking the 11th most wins in a single season in Ball State history. Ball State finished 10-6 in the MAC to place second in the West Division. Newberry worked closely with the Cardinals' wing players and helped Chris Bond earn MAC All-Freshman Team accolades.

In 2009-10, the Cardinals posted a 15-15 overall record and an 8-8 mark in league play as they finished in second place in the MAC West, one game out of the top spot.

In 2008-09, Newberry's first season in his assistant role, the Cardinals were picked to finish fifth in the MAC West Division but posted a 7-9 record to tie for the divisional title. He helped Ball State earn the number two seed and the first-round bye in the MAC Tournament.

Before stepping into his coaching role, Newberry spent two seasons as director of basketball operations for the Cardinals. He assisted with academics, scheduling, practice planning, film exchange and game film editing, among other duties.

Before coming to Ball State, Newberry spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Augusta State where he was instrumental in all aspects of the Division II program, including team evaluation, player development, scouting, practice design and game coaching. Augusta State compiled an overall record of 34-24 and a 5-1 mark against nationally ranked teams while he was there.

Prior to Augusta State, Newberry was the assistant men's basketball coach and intramural director at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. In addition to his basketball duties which included recruiting, scouting and coaching, Newberry also served as intramural director for over 1,200 individuals.

Newberry started his coaching career in 2000 as an assistant coach and the head junior varsity coach at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky. He was responsible for practice design, player development and game coaching for the NCAA Division III program. 

From 2000 to 2002, Newberry was a teacher and coach at Madeira High School and Sycamore High School in Ohio.

A four-year letterwinner in basketball at Rollins College, Newberry was his team's Most Outstanding Senior and team captain his final year.

A 2000 graduate from Rollins College with a degree in mathematics, Newberry earned his master's in education in health and physical education from Augusta State in 2006.

Newberry and his wife, Laurie, have two daughters, Sarah (7) and Cadence (born in 2012), and three sons, Matty (5), Auggy (3) and Jay Jr. (2).
