Volleyball Holds First Official Practice Of 2014

MUNCIE, Ind. - - It may be summer outside, but was in the air inside Worthen Arena Wednesday afternoon, as the Ball State women’s volleyball team held its first preseason practice for the 2014 season.

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Steve Shondell, the 2010 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, the Cardinals return 10 student-athletes, including eight letterwinners, from last season’s squad which posted a 24-8 (12-4 MAC) record and won a share of the league’s West Division title. Added to the mix this season are five incoming freshman and one transfer.

Highlighting the list of returning student-athletes are a pair of First Team All-MAC selections in junior outside hitter Alex Fuelling (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/Morehead State) and junior middle blocker Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley). Fuelling led the Ball State offense and ranked fourth in the conference last season with a 3.65 kills-per-set average, while Benson ranked third in the conference with a .353 hitting percentage.

The Ball State women’s volleyball team opens the 2014 campaign Aug. 29-30, when it hosts the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge. The Cardinals’ first match will be against Western Illinois at 8 p.m. on the 29th.
