In a Friday elimination game at the Mid-American Conference Tournament, Ball State’s baseball team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the No. 8 seed Western Michigan Broncos Friday afternoon.

Ball State got on the board first when 2014 MAC Freshman Player of the Year, Jarett Rindfleisch, laced a single up the middle and scored Alex Call from second base in the first inning and the Cardinals led 1-0.

Unfortunately, the first inning score was the only time the Cardinals could cross the plate and Ball State was eliminated from the MAC Tournament with a 39-18 overall record.

After holding the Broncos scoreless for two innings, the Cardinals gave up an unearned run to Western Michigan and the game was tied at 1-1 through three innings.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until Western Michigan managed three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

But, Ball State’s offense could muster only three hits in the game and was held scoreless for the final eight frames to suffer the loss.

After pitching in only 22.1 innings in 17 appearances during the season, Nestor Bautista started on the mound for the Cardinals and lasted three innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out one.  He gave way to Tyler Jordan, who entered with the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, and retired the first three batters he faced before leaving in the fifth inning.  Jordan allowed one hit and one earned run in his outing and suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year.

Zach Plesac, the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year, entered the game in the fifth and finished the game out for the Cardinals, allowing no earned runs and striking out five.

Rindfleisch was 2-for-4 with one RBI on the day, while Alex Maloney recorded the only other hit for the Cardinals.
