CARMEL, Ind. – Ball State put three players in the top 20 on the final leaderboard but finished seventh as a team as the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships concluded Sunday. Kent State won for the sixth straight year.

Ball State junior McCormick Clouser and freshman Keegan McKinney were each named to the All-MAC Second Team at the awards ceremony that followed the tournament.

James Blackwell closed with a 76 to tie for 13th place as Ball State’s top individual with a 72-hole total of 296 (+8). The sophomore from Buffalo, N.Y., was one of four Cardinals competing at the MAC Championships for the first time.

Clouser led Ball State for the second straight day with a 74 and finished 16th at 298 (+10). Senior Tyler Merkel wrapped up his decorated career with a round of 76 to tie for 17th at 299 (+11).

Ball State also counted a 77 from Albert Jennings on the way to a team score of 303 in the final round. The Cardinals concluded the event with a total of 1,195 (+43) over four rounds at Prairie View Golf Club.

“We just could not get anything going throughout the round today,” Ball State head coach Mike Fleck said. “This was not the result we had hoped for, but we have some younger guys who gained invaluable experience this week. On the other side, it’s tough to see Tyler’s career come to an end. He has meant so much to our program and has left quite a mark over the past four years.”

Kent State also closed with a round of 303, but its 23-stroke lead entering the day was too much for any team to make up. The Golden Flashes won with a total of 1,155 (+3). Akron (+13) took second, followed by Toledo (+16) in third.

Kent State occupied the top two spots on the individual leaderboard. Corey Conners dropped one shot to par Sunday but still finished 11 under for the week to win the second MAC title of his career. He was five shots clear of teammate and defending medalist Taylor Pendrith.

McKinney was Ball State’s non-counter Sunday with a 79 to finish with a total of 304 (+16). Jennings finished at 315 (+27).
