Ball State’s baseball team tallied an 8-6 win at Ohio State Wednesday night to improve to 25-12 on the season.

T.J. Weir managed a two-run homer and recorded the pitching save for the Cardinals in the win that dropped Ohio State to 21-17 on the season.

Ohio State threatened in the bottom of the fourth. Troy Montgomery reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning before Sean Godfrey climbed the wall in left center to rob Josh Dezse of a two-run home run on a play Ball State head coach Rich Maloney called "the greatest catch I have witnessed in my coaching career".

Behind a five-run fourth inning and a three-run sixth inning, Ball State managed eight runs on 10 hits, while limiting the Buckeyes to six runs on 11 hits.

Nestor Bautista pitched 1.2 innings to record the victory, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out two.  Weir recorded the save after pitching the final two innings, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out four.

The Cardinals started their scoring in the fourth when Sean Godfrey opened the inning with a single to left field and scored on a Sean Kennedy single through the left side of the infield.  T.J. Weir homered to left and his two runs-batted-in gave Ball State a 3-2 lead.  Sam Tidaback singled to center field and an Alex Maloney single to center scored Kyle Raleigh, who had been hit by a pitch.  Ryan Spaulding’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Tidaback and the Cardinals led 5-2.

Ball State’s sixth inning scoring started when Alex Call reached first on an infield single and scored two wild pitches later.  Spaulding walked and scored on a Kennedy sacrifice bunt.  Caleb Stayton plated the Cardinals’ eighth run of the game after reaching base via a walk, advancing to second on a wild pitch, moving to third on the Kennedy bunt and scoring on a passed ball.

Kennedy was 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI, while Weir was 1-for-5 with two RBI.  Call and Godfrey added two hits apiece.

Ball State will take its 9-2 Mid-American Conference record into a three-game home series with Western Michigan at Ball Diamond in Muncie, Ind., Friday through Sunday.  Friday’s first pitch is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
