MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (11-11) earned a 6-1 mid-week non-conference victory over IUPUI (4-17) Wednesday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
"We started slowly in doubles and really didn’t deserve to win the point," said Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards. "I think we had a bit of a letdown after a big conference win on Sunday. I think struggling in doubles was a bit of a wakeup call and 4 singles wins were secured pretty quickly. So overall it was a solid performance by our guys."
The Cardinals won two of the three double matches to claim the point over the Jaguars. Ray Leonard paired up with Austin Smith at the No. 1 position to take down IUPUI's Thomas Gans and Jacob Bradley, 8-7 (6). The Mid-American Conference Player of the Week recipient Patrick Elliott and his doubles partner Andrew Stutz earned an 8-6 win over Alex Toliver and Manuel Laboy on court two.
In singles play Wednesday, Ball State's Elliott, Lucas Andersen, Smith, Patrick Downs and Stutz all registered victories in their respective positions. At the No. 2 slot, Elliott beat Toliver in straight sets. Andersen defeated Bradley 6-2, 6-1 while Smith downed Gans 6-2, 6-0 on courts three and four. Downs was the last one off the court at No. 5 singles, after winning the first set 6-4 he dropped the second set 7-6 and then won the tiebreaker 10-7 over Vema.
The Ball State men's tennis team will close out the week with their last MAC regular season match versus Buffalo (11-5, 1-1 MAC) with first serve at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. If moved indoors, they will be played at the YMCA Tennis Center.
