MUNCIE, Ind. -The Ball State men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 Mid-American Conference match to Toledo Sunday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. The Cardinals now hold an overall record of 8-10 along with a 0-1 MAC mark while Toledo improves to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in league action.
The Cardinals fell behind early in doubles action after Austin Smith and Ray Leonard fell to Garrett Cona and Stjepan Sisko, 8-3 on court one. After that, Ball State rallied back with a win at No. 3 doubles. The twosome of Lucas Andersen and Matt Helm defeated Ryan Jorgensen and Roberto Meza, 6-3. It would come down to court two, Patrick Elliott and Andrew Stutz were down against Mark Singnil and Nicky Wong but would come back to win 8-7(5) to give Ball State the 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.
Andersen won his match at the No. 3 position over Wong in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Smith beat Ryan Jorgensen 6-1, 6-3. Toledo would tie the match 3-3 after posting victories on courts 2, 5 and 6. With the match tied it came down to Leonard and Singnil at the No. 1 spot. Singnil took the first set of the match, 6-4. Leonard answered quickly by taking the second set 3-6 but Singnil would take the third set 6-3 giving the Rockets a win over the Cardinals.
The Ball State men's tennis team begins a three-match road swing when it travels to Chicago State (April 3) and Northern Illinois (April 5). The Cardinals will return home after Ball State plays at Western Michigan (April 13).
