MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep over the Butler Bulldogs Thursday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win the Cardinals improve to 8-9 overall while Butler falls to 8-5.
The Cardinals began the competition winning all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Ray Leonard and Austin Smith paired up at the No. 1 doubles position and took down Butler's duo of Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon, 8-6. On court two, Patrick Elliott and Andrew Stutz defeated Pulok Bhattacharya and Brandon Woods, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Ball State twosome of Lucas Andersen and Matt Helm managed an 8-7 (4) tie breaker victory over Alex Woldmoe and Tommy Marx.
Ball State shutout Butler in singles action winning all six matches. Leonard, Elliott, Andersen, Smith and Stutz all took their respective opponents down in straight sets. Patrick Downs won his first set 6-4 but would lose the second set forcing the match to go into a third set tiebreaker. Downs would take the match from Marx in the third set, 12-10, on court six to round out the wins for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will begin league play as the defending Mid-American Conference regular season champions when Ball State hosts Toledo Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. Ball State ended MAC action last year with an unblemished 5-0 ledger. The MAC regular season crown was the first for the Cardinals since the 2006 season. Ball State has now won 21 MAC titles in program history, including 17 undefeated MAC seasons. Ball State has participated in the MAC for the last 33 years, claiming 37 regular season and/ or tournament championships. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won the league tournament six times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2011).
