MUNCIE, Ind. - - After fun in the sun last week in Florida, the Ball State outdoor track & field team will get a blast of northern reality this weekend when it travels to Purdue’s Rankin Track & Field for the two-day Mike Poehlein Invitational, which begins Friday.
On what is forecasted to be a cold and wet weekend, the Cardinals and host Boilermakers are slated to compete against St. Joseph’s, IUPUI, Wayne State, Marian and Valparaiso over the two-day event.
Only one event is scheduled for Friday, with the hammer throw beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s action starts in the field at 10 a.m. with the javelin throw, while running events being at Noon with the 3,000m steeple chase.
Unlike last week, in which the Cardinals sent a limited squad to the USF Bulls Invitational, a total of 27 student-athletes are scheduled to compete in at least one individual event at the Mike Poehlein Invitational.
One of the highlights from last week’s meet was the performance of junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) in the long jump. Crawford enters the week as the league-leader in the event with her leap of 5.93m (19’-5.5”), which is also a Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship automatic qualifying mark.
In the high jump, junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) also enters the week as a league-leader, by successfully clearing 1.63m (5’-4.25”) at the USF Bulls Invitational.
In the sprints, redshirt junior Hannah Lange (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) enters the Mike Poehlein Invitational with the league’s second-best time in the 400m dash at 57.40.
