MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State senior Austin Smith was named the Mid-American Conference Tennis Player of the Week today after earning a pair of singles matches last weekend over No. 18 Vanderbilt and Lipscomb.
This is the first MAC Weekly honor for Smith after he went 2-0 in singles action last weekend for the Cardinals. Smith started the weekend strong after defeating No. 18 Vanderbilt's Rhys Johnson, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Smith carried his momentum into Saturday's competition at Lipscomb, where he took down Daniel Hernandez in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 on court four. In doubles competition, Smith went 1-1 earning an 8-7 (10-2) victory over Miquel Cortez and Stuart Tierney at Limpscomb and also came close to upsetting No. 18 Vanderbilt's duo of Rhys Johnson and Ryan Smith but fell 8-7 (7-3).
The Ball State men's tennis team plays North Dakota in Las Vegas Friday and UNLV Saturday both matches are set to start of 5 p.m. EST.
