No. 14 Men's Volleyball Defeats Mount Olive, 3-0
MUNCIE, Ind. - The No. 14 Ball State men’s volleyball team swept Mount Olive College (25-15, 25-9, 25-20) Saturday evening at Worthen Arena. Senior Kevin Owens led the team with eight kills while junior Matt Sutherland added seven kills. The Cardinals out-blocked the Trojans 16 – 3 in total team blocks.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 10-5 on the season while the Trojans fall to 7-9 on the year.
Owens was accurate on his attacks on the night, not committing a single attack error off 11 swings for a .727 attack percentage. The middle attacker added three digs, two solo blocks and three assisted blocks on the night.
Sutherland earned the start and added seven kills, a service ace, six digs and a career-high six blocks. Sophomore Marcin Niemczewski registered five kills, four digs and three assisted blocks while junior Shane Witmer chipped in four kills, two service aces, six digs and three assisted blocks.
Freshman Alex Pia got four kills off the four attacks he made on the night, a career-high in kills for the middle attacker. Setters Hiago Garchet and Graham McIlvaine shared time on the court tallying 15 and 13 assists respectively. Senior Matt Leske had five assisted blocks on the night to go with one kill.
Ball State hit .256 for the match (30-10-78) while Mount Olive managed -.133 (21-34-98). The Cardinals hit .500 in the second set (9-1-16). Both teams had five service aces while committing six errors each.
Ball State will continue its home stand next weekend when it hosts Belmont Abbey on Friday, Mar. 7 and King on Saturday, Mar. 8. Both matches are set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
