DEKALB, Ill. - The Ball State women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 63-50 Mid-American Conference road win at Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
With the win, Ball State improved to 10-12 on the season with a 5-6 MAC mark. Northern Illinois falls to 8-13 overall and 4-7 in league action.
Nathalie Fontaine led all scorers with 18 points. Katie Murphy chipped in 10 points while Shelbie Justice and Brandy Woody both contributed nine points apiece. Woody also added seven rebounds to the victory.
For the game, Ball State shot 50 percent from the field while holding Northern Illinois to 38.5 shooting from the floor.
Northern Illinois jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Ball State to start the game. Fontaine answered with a three point basket at the 16:44 mark to tie the game 3-3. After that, both teams traded baskets up until the 9:07 mark when then Cardinals finally pulled away from Huskies. Justice knocked down a trey followed by a layup from Fontaine, which would spark a 6-0 run for Ball State.
The Huskies got to within four (20-16) with 3:36 on the clock but the Cardinals would finish the first half off with a 12-16 run to go up 28-18 over Northern Illinois at intermission.
The Cardinals continued to have a big second half as they led by as many as 18 (50-32) after free throw shots from Brittany Carter with 8:01 remaining. Northern Illinois would come to within nine (53-44) at the 3:43 mark and 58-49 with 1:49 on the clock but free throws from Murphy and Justice stopped the Huskies momentum.
The Ball State women’s basketball team will take a break from mid-week competition before hosting Akron Saturday, Feb. 15 at Worthen Arena. The game will be televised on Time Warner Sports and ESPN3. The Cardinals will be hosting a doubleheader Saturday, the Ball State men's basketball team will play Bowling Green at 4 p.m.
