EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Ball State University women's tennis team improved to 4-1 in dual action and picked up a 4-3 upset over Big Ten foe Michigan State in East Lansing Sunday afternoon.  With the loss, MSU falls to 2-1 on the season.

The Spartans opened the match sweeping the doubles matches.  At No. 2 doubles the Michigan State twosome of Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot edged Ball State's duo of Toni Ormond and Kristel Sanders, 6-4.  At No. 3 doubles Catherine Parenteau and Anna Zelechonok took down Ayaka Terashi and Courtney Wild, 6-3.  Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore played a close match to Emily Meyers and Julianne Gruber, the Spartans were winning 5-4 before the match was suspended.

After losing the doubles point the Cardinal rallied from their early 1-0 deficit with victories at each of the top two singles positions and the bottom two spots.  Terashi tied the match at 1-1 after beating Jennifer Yen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.  The Cardinals then fell into a 3-1 hole after losing both at No. 4 and No. 3 singles.  However, Ball State would rattle off the last three victories at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 2. Wild got things started with a 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (6) win at No. 1 singles which made it a 3-2 match.

With the Spartans leading 3-2, the matches came down to Moore and Earnest.  Moore won her first set but then dropped the second one to Trouillot.  She would then win the third set tie breaker 10-4 for the No. 5 singles victory.  The Cardinals fate came down to No. 2 singles, Earnest won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to seal the win for Ball State.
