Men's Tennis Hosts UDM In Spring Opener Saturday
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team will open the 2014 spring season at home this weekend when it hosts Detroit Mercy (Saturday) and IPFW (Sunday) at 2 p.m.in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
Ball State will face Detroit Mercy in their first match playing three doubles and six singles matches Saturday. The Cardinals end their weekend play Sunday against IPFW at 2 p.m. with the same format.
Head Coach Bill Richards begins his 42nd season at the helm of the Cardinals. Ball State posted an 16-8 overall record in the spring of 2013. The Cardinals were crowned Mid-American Conference regular season champions this season after finishing league play 5-0. The MAC regular season crown was the first for the Cardinals since the 2006 season. Ball State has now won 20 MAC titles in program history, including 17 undefeated MAC seasons. Ball State has participated in the MAC for the last 33 years, claiming 37 regular season and/ or tournament championships. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won the league tournament six times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2011).
The Cardinals return three letterwinners from last season. Ball State welcomes back junior Ray Leonard who earned First Team All-MAC honors for the second straight season.
The Ball State men's tennis team returns home next Sunday, Jan. 26 when it hosts Cleveland State at 2 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. After that, the Cardinals will play at Michigan State for their first road match beginning at 12 p.m.
