MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to competition by taking on IUPUI and Xavier at the IUPUI Natatorium on Friday, Jan. 10. It will be the first competition for either squad in 2014.
The women’s squad is coming off a sixth place finish at the Miami Invitational. Senior Bridgette Ruehl won the 100 and 200 breast to stay undefeated in the breaststroke event finals. Classmate Haley Richter finished second in the 100 fly posting a season-best time of 55.76.
Junior Jordan VanWinkle added her name to the Ball State record book after posting a season-best time of 5:04.58 in the event finals of the 500 free event finals. VanWinkle’s time ranks 10th in program history. The junior also owns the sixth-best 200 free time after posting a 1:52.13.
The men’s team was last in competition at the Eastern Michigan Invitational where it finished fourth. Freshman Austin Green posted a lifetime best in the 50 free with a time of 21.54. Senior Drew Tharp finished sixth in the 100 fly with a season-best time of 51.18 while freshman Tanner Barton claimed a season-best time of 51.60. Tharp also finished fifth in the 200 fly with a season-best time of 1:53.89.
Senior Michael Oaks earned 10th place in the 100 free with a season-best 47.44 while Drew Sullenbarger finished 10th in the 200 back with a 1:56.55, a season-best time.
