Field Hockey Loses Heart Breaker to Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Ball State field hockey ended the 2013 campaign losing a heartbreaker to Missouri State, 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon. Junior Tori Widrick scored the last-second goal that sent the game into overtime.

Ball State ends the 2013 season with a 6-12 overall record and a 1-4 conference record. Missouri State ends the year with at 4-12 overall and 1-4 in MAC play. The Cardinals finished the year with the most wins since the 2010 campaign when Ball State went 6-14 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Both squads played to a 0-0 tie after the first 35 minutes of action. Missouri State held the advantage in shots in the first half, 9-4, while the Cardinals managed three penalty corners to the Bears’ two.

Missouri State’s Adrea Donaldson would get the Bears on the board at the 46:49 mark off a rebound into the right side of the goal. The Cardinals managed to get the last-second goal when they drew one of their 10 second-half penalty corners. Widrick managed to find the back of the cage off a rebound for the equalizer at the 69:38 mark.

The Bears would score the game-winning goal two and a half minutes into the overtime period when Mallory Tyler fed Kristen Matula into the left side of the goal.

Missouri State would finish with 16 shots while Ball State ended with 11. The Cardinals held the advantage in penalty corners, 13-7, while the Bears made seven total saves to the Cardinals’ six.

Freshmen Bryce Barnes and Lexi Kavanaugh, sophomore Natalie Jardell and junior Tori Widrick each registered two shots. Freshman Colleen McGlynn, sophomore Allie White and red-shirt sophomore Bianca Velez also tallied shots for Ball State.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Shelby Henley made five saves on the day while junior Jenna Roseberry registered a defensive save. Missouri State split up the goalie duties among Andrea Bain and Katie Mulloy while defender Kristin Matula also tallied a defensive save.
