MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team closed its regular season Thursday with a 3-2 loss to Miami University in rainy, windy conditions at the Briner Sports Complex.

Elaina Musleh and Victoria Jacobs each scored for Ball State, which surrendered three goals defensively for the first time all year. The Cardinals are now 10-6-3 overall (5-4-3 MAC), while Miami is 10-6-3 overall (7-1-3 MAC).

Ball State will be the No. 6 seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament and will travel to play a quarterfinal game Sunday at Central Michigan. Eastern Michigan claimed the league’s regular-season title with a 2-1 road win Thursday at Western Michigan.

In Thursday’s game between Ball State and Miami, the first two goals came just over a minute apart with one for each team. Miami took a brief lead at the 31:41 mark on a quick corner kick when Taylor Jackson found Jess Bronke for a header. Ball State answered quickly when Madison Oyer ripped a shot that deflected off the crossbar, and Musleh was there for the putback.

The RedHawks, however, regained the lead for good in the 39th minute when Katy Dolesh took a Jackson cross that was punched away by Ball State goalkeeper Layne Schramm and put the ball into the back of the net.

Miami added its third score in the 72nd minute when Kelsey Dinges found a cutting Katee Wensinger in front of the net to give the RedHawks a two-goal lead. Jacobs drew the Cardinals within one again on a 25-yard blast with four minutes to play, but Miami then salted the game away.

Jacobs’ goal was her fifth of the season, as the Ball State defender leads the team in that category. Musleh’s goal was her third of the year.

Miami goalkeeper Allison Norenberg made seven saves on the day, while Schramm made six stops for the Cardinals between the posts.

With 10 victories this season, Ball State will enter the MAC Tournament with its highest win total since 2007. The Cardinals will visit Central Michigan, where they just played less than a week ago. The Chippewas emerged with a 1-0, double-overtime victory in that contest.

The winner of Sunday’s game will advance to the semifinals to be played at the site of the top remaining seed in the tournament.
