Field Hockey Wraps Up Regular Season on the Road

MUNCIE, Ind. -  The Ball State field hockey team will wrap up the 2013-14 regular season Sunday, Nov. 3 for a 1 p.m. game at Missouri State. The Cardinals rank seventh in the country in defensive saves with 11 on the year.

The Cardinals (6-11, 1-3 MAC) are coming off a split week where they picked up a 1-0 conference win over Ohio and dropped contests against Ohio State, 2-1, and Indiana, 6-1.

As a team, the Cardinals rank seventh in the country in defensive saves with 11, while red-shirt sophomore Bianca Velez leads the MAC and is third in the country with eight on the year. Sophomore goalie Shelby Henley leads the conference and is 16th in the nation in saves per game with a 6.82 average. Ball State is first in the MAC in saves (139) and saves per game (8.18).

Ball State is third in the MAC in shots (178) and fourth in shots per game with a 10.47 average. The Cardinals are fourth in the league in assists (17) and fifth in assists per game (1.00).

Junior Tarel Teach ranks fourth in the league in shots with 35 on the year and is fifth in shots per game average at 2.06. Freshman Lexi Kavanaugh is tied for fifth in the conference in goals with seven and is sixth in goals per game (0.41). Junior Tori Widrick has the fifth-most assists in the MAC with five while her 0.33 assists per game average is tied for fifth.

SCOUTING MISSOURI STATE: Missouri State is 3-12 on the year and 0-4 in MAC play. The Bears were shutout, 2-0, last weekend by the Chippewas of Central Michigan. Missouri State ranks just behind Ball State in defensive saves with 10 and the team ranks fourth in saves (84) and third in saves per game (5.60).

Holly Scherer is fifth in the conference in shots (32) and fourth in shots per game (2.13). Hillary Lawless is the team’s leading goal scorer with six on the year which puts her tied for seventh in the league. Goalie Andrea Bain is fourth in the conference in saves (52) and sixth in saves per game (3.47).

SERIES HISTORY: The Cardinals hold the advantage in the all-time series with Missouri State, 9-6, but the Bears have won the last two contests including a 4-2 win at the BSU Turf Field at the Briner Sports Complex last season. Velez and White both scored in the game.
