Field Hockey Set for MAC Foe Kent State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team looks to earn its first conference win of the season Saturday, Oct. 19 when it hosts Kent State for a 1 p.m. game. The game will mark the halfway point in the conference season.

Ball State (5-8, 0-2 MAC) ranks first in the MAC in saves (98) and savers per game (7.54). The Cardinals are tied for second in the league in defensive saves (six) and shutouts (two) and third in shots (145) and shots per game (11.15).

Junior Tarel Teach is third in the conference in shots (30) and shots per game (2.31). Freshman Lexi Kavanaugh is tied for fourth in the league in goals scored (six) and goals per game (0.46). Junior Tori Widrick’s four assists ranks fourth in the MAC while her 0.36 assists per game average puts her third.

Red-shirt sophomore Bianca Velez is tied for first in defensive saves, having registered four on the season. Sophomore Shelby Henley is first in the league in saves (88), saves per game (6.77) and is tied for first with shutouts (two). Henley’s .672 save percentage is third in the league.

SCOUTING KENT STATE: The Golden Flashes are 6-8 on the year and a spotless 2-0 in Mid-American Conference action. Kent State most recently picked up a 3-2 overtime win against Central Michigan.

Kent State is ranked first in the conference in scoring average (3.27), shots per game (19.57), goals scored (46), goals per game (3.29), assists (39), assists per game (2.79) and penalty corners per game(8.86).

Julia Hofmann leads the team and the MAC in shots (63) and shots per game (4.50). Hoffman’s 0.57 goals per game puts her second in the conference while teammate Abbie Carrico leads the conference in assists (6) and assists per game (0.43). Goalie Jahna Jordan’s 3.40 goals against average ranks fourth in the MAC, while her .614 save percentage is fifth.

SERIES HISTORY: Ball State holds the slight 33-30 advantage in the all-time series against Kent State. The Golden Flashes took the last game, 6-4, on Oct. 13, 2012 in Kent. Allie White, Teach, Bethany Han and Devon Bell all scored goals for the Cardinals in the game.
