MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team returns to the Briner Sports Complex this weekend to continue Mid-American Conference play with games against Toledo and Northern Illinois.
The Cardinals will host the Rockets at 4:30 p.m. Friday and the Huskies at 1 p.m. Sunday. Friday is a Student Rewards bonus game with 300 points available for students who swipe their IDs. Sunday will serve as Senior Day with the Cardinals honoring seniors Michelle Blok, Maimee Morris, Kelsey Shapiro and Layne Schramm prior to the game.
Both contests this weekend will air on Sports Link Radio 91.3 FM with the broadcasts streamed on ballstatesports.com. Live stats will also be available.
Ball State enters Friday’s game with the best overall record in the MAC at 9-4-1 and tied for second in the league race at 4-2 in conference play. The Cardinals split a pair of tough road games last weekend, handing Eastern Michigan its first MAC loss before falling to league-leading Western Michigan.
Strong defense continues to be the hallmark for a Ball State team that ranks seventh in the nation in save percentage (.882), 28th in goals against average (.616) and 35th in shutout percentage (.500). The Cardinals have shut out seven of their 14 opponents.
Schramm and Brooke Dennis continue to rank at the top of the MAC goalkeeping statistics, and Schramm moved into the top five in the national rankings this week in both save percentage (third at .909) and goals against average (fifth at .406). Schramm has posted four shutouts in her past five starts.
Victoria Jacobs scored her third goal of the season in last weekend’s win at Eastern Michigan to tie Michelle Blok for the second most on the team. Freshman Kelsey Wendlandt leads the Cardinals with four goals, while Cailey Starck tops the team with assists to rank third in the MAC.
Toledo comes to Muncie at 5-9 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Rockets have won two of their past three games and allowed just one goal during that stretch, including a pair of shutout victories for goalkeeper Sam Tiongson.
Toledo features one of the MAC’s top scoring threats in Rachel MacLeod, who is tied for the league lead with 10 goals on the season. She has accounted for nearly half of the Rockets’ 21 goals on the year.
Ball State is 8-6 all-time versus Toledo, including 5-2 against the Rockets at home. Toledo edged Ball State on an overtime penalty kick last year.
Northern Illinois is 4-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. The Huskies will play on the road Friday at Miami University before traveling to Muncie. NIU was also on the road last weekend, playing Bowling Green to a scoreless draw and falling at Central Michigan.
Nicole Gobbo leads the Huskies with six goals on the season, while goalkeeper Amy Carr has played every minute between the posts and owns a 1.69 goals against average.
Ball State is 6-5-3 all-time against Northern Illinois, including a 4-3-1 mark in Muncie. The Cardinals topped the Huskies 1-0 last year in sloppy conditions in DeKalb, Ill.
