MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men’s golf team makes the short trip to Carmel, Ind., this week to compete with some high caliber teams on a major championship course at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate.

Ball State is one of 11 top-100 teams in the 14-team field. Five teams at the event are ranked in the top 50 in the latest Golfstat national rankings, led by No. 6 Georgia.

Hosted by Indiana, the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate begins Monday and is one of two tournaments remaining on Ball State’s fall schedule. After playing four straight weeks to start the season, the Cardinals took last week off from tournament competition.

Tyler Merkel leads Ball State with a 73.08 stroke average and has competed well against a tough schedule to this point, posting three top-20 finishes. McCormick Clouser and Keegan McKinney have also played in all four events this year and will again be a part of the lineup this week.

Zach Yinger will make his second straight appearance for the Cardinals after playing at Ohio State’s Jack Nicklaus Invitational, while Tyler Ostrom will see his first action as part of the Ball State lineup. Ostrom, a sophomore, has played in four career events as an individual.

James Blackwell will compete as Ball State’s individual at Crooked Stick.

The field for this week’s tournament includes a trio of SEC teams -- Arkansas, Georgia and Florida -- and three Big Ten teams -- Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue. Florida State, Notre Dame, TCU, Kansas, Toledo, Eastern Michigan and IUPUI are also competing.

Crooked Stick Golf Club, a Pete Dye-designed course, has hosted prestigious amateur events in addition to a PGA Championship, a U.S. Senior Open and a Solheim Cup. It hosted last year’s BMW Championship as part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The two-day, 54-hole Crooked Stick Intercollegiate features two rounds Monday and the final round Tuesday. The action begins Monday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start, and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Ball State will play on day one with Arkansas and Purdue.
