Field Hockey Takes on Miami and Michigan State

MUNCIE, Ind. -  The Ball State field hockey team will face Mid-American foe Miami on Friday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to face Michigan State on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. The Cardinals are 5-6 on the season and 0-1 in MAC play.

Ball State leads the conference in saves (87) and saves per game (7.91) and ranks second in the MAC in shots per game (12.36).

Tarel Teach is third in the league in shots per game with 2.55 while Bethany Han ranks fifth (2.18) and Lexi Kavanaugh is tied for sixth (2.00). Kavanaugh’s average of 0.55 goals per game puts her second in the MAC while Tori Widrick’s 0.44 assists per game average is the second-best mark in the conference.

Defensively, Shelby Henley leads the league in saves (82) and saves per game (7.45). Bianca Velez and Jenna Rosenberry are second and fourth in defensive saves.

SCOUTING MIAMI:  Miami is 6-6 on the year and the game vs. Ball State will be their first MAC tilt. Miami is coming off a 2-0 win over Michigan State last weekend. The RedHawks rank first as a team in the MAC in scoring margin (0.25) and second in scoring average (2.33 goals per game), goals against average (2.08), shots (11.75), goals scored (28), goals per game (2.33), assists per game (1.83), penalty corners (6.92 per game) and saves (6.33 per game).

Ali Froede and Alyssa Logan have six and five goals on the season to rank T2 and T6 in the conference. Valentina Neira’s five assists on the year put her second in the MAC in assists. Sid Marcum leads the league in defensive saves having notched four so far in 2013. Goalie Sarah Mueller ranks just behind Henley with 70 saves on the year and her 2.08 goals against average is the second-best mark in the conference.

SERIES HISTORY: Ball State holds the all-time advantage in the series at 45-19. The two teams have been facing each other since the 1976 season. The RedHawks took a 7-1 last season in Muncie on Oct. 20.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE: Michigan State (5-7, 2-0 Big Ten) is coming off a split weekend, defeating Indiana 4-3 before dropping a 2-0 game to Miami. Allie Ahern leads the offense with nine goals on the season.  In goal, Molly Cassidy has played the majority of minutes for the Spartans. Cassidy has a 2.30 goals against average and has made 48 saves on the season.

SERIES HISTORY: Ball State holds an 11-8-2 record against the Spartans in a series spanning back to the 1982 season. The teams last met on Oct. 8, 2011 when Michigan State took a 1-0 win in Muncie.
