Ball State improved to 5-1 overall after posting a 48-27 win over the Atlantic Coast Conference's Virginia Cavaliers . . . The Cardinals' win over Virginia was only the second all-time by one of the current Mid-American Conference schools over the Cavaliers . . . Virginia entered the game with a 10-1-1 mark vs. current MAC schools.

Ball State is off to a 5-1 start for the first time since the 2008 season when the Cardinals were 12-0 in the regular season . . . It is just the fourth start of 5-1 or better for the Cardinals since 1978 . . . Ball State started 5-1 through six games in 1978 and 1988 and was 6-0 in 2008.

The Ball State win over Virginia was the first non-conference loss in the month of October for the Cavaliers since a 31-21 loss to East Carolina in 2006 . . . It marked Ball State's first-ever win over an opponent from any of the current ACC schools.

Ball State is now 11-1 in its past 12 regular season games and has won seven straight Mid-American Conference games . . . Ball State is 2-0 in MAC play in 2013 with league wins at Eastern Michigan (51-20) and vs. Toledo (31-24).

The Cardinals' win vs. Toledo was their seventh straight MAC victory dating back to the 2012 season . . . The streak ties for the third longest in school history . . . Four of those seven consecutive MAC wins have been on the road.

Ball State, which entered the Virginia game as the only Football Bowl Subdivision team in the country to have scored a touchdown on its opening drive in each of the first five games of 2013, did not score on its first drive against the Cavaliers, but did score a TD on its second drive of the game.

The Cardinals have scored 248 points in their first six games this season -- Illinois State (51), Army (40), North Texas (27), Eastern Michigan (51), Toledo (31) and Virginia (48) . . . The 248 points are the most in school history in the first six games of a season . . . The 2008 team scored 238 points through its first six games and went on to finish the regular season with a 12-0 record . . . Ball State needs 30 points to tie for the 10th highest single-season scoring total in school history . . . The school standard for points in a year is 489 in 2008.

Ball State scored 51 points vs. Illinois State and at Eastern Michigan, which marks only the second time in school history and the first time since 1965 the Cardinals have scored at least 50 points in two games in the same season.

Ball State ranks No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in passing offense (337.5) and No. 2 in scoring offense (41.3) . . . The Cardinals rank No. 3 in the league in scoring defense (24.5) . . . The Cardinals are 12th in the nation in passing offense and third in turnovers gained (16) . . . Ball State has recovered 10 fumbles from opponents this year to lead the country in the latest NCAA statistics.
