Ball State football's senior defensive end Jonathan Newsome has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Ball State's 48-27 win at Virginia.
Newsome tallied four tackles, including two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in Ball State’s first-ever victory over a school from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Newsome was part of a Ball State defense that forced Virginia into four turnovers – three fumbles and one interception – in the road victory.
One of Newsome's sacks came on a fourth down with less than eight minutes remaining in the game, allowing the Cardinals to take over on downs in Virginia territory and take time off the clock en route to the victory.
Ball State, under the direction of third-year head coach Pete Lembo, improved to 5-1 on the season with the win at Virginia and is 2-0 in MAC play. The Cardinals host Kent State Saturday in a 3 p.m. Homecoming Game at Scheumann Stadium.
