MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team swept the MAC weekly honors as redshirt sophomore Bianca Velez was named Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore Shelby Henley was named Defensive Player of the Week. Ball State is 5-4 on the season after picking up wins over UC Davis and Vermont.
Velez registered a career-high two goals in the 3-0 win over Vermont. She was a crucial piece of the Cardinals’ penalty corner set, scoring all of her goals off of the play. In the win over UC Davis the redshirt sophomore scored in the 13th minute and then set up teammate Tori Widrick in the 17th minute for a goal.
Henley and the Cardinals posted their second shutout of the season in the 3-0 win over Vermont. The last time the Cardinals posted two shutouts in a season was in 2010. Henley has a season goals against average of 2.34 and has made 71 saves.
The last time Ball State had an Offensive Player of the Week was during the 2010 season when Devanny Kuhn and Maura Sawicki earned the nod. Elizabeth Blaum was the last Cardinal to earn the Defensive Player of the Week honor in 2009.
The Cardinals open up conference play on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Central Michigan. Ball State will take on No. 19 Michigan on Sunday.
