Ball State improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference with a 31-24 victory at home over Toledo . . . It marks the best record for a Ball State team through five games since starting the 2008 season with a 5-0 record . . . The 4-1 record after five games is just the fourth start of 4-1 or better for the Cardinals since 1978.
Ball State is the only Football Bowl Subdivision team in the country to have scored a touchdown on its opening drive in each of the first five games of 2013 . . . East Carolina has opened with a touchdown in all four of its games, while Baylor has done it in all three of its games in 2013.
The Cardinals' win vs. Toledo was their seventh straight MAC victory dating back to the 2012 season . . . The streak ties for the third longest in school history . . . Four of those seven consecutive MAC wins have been on the road . . . Ball State is now 10-1 in its past 11 regular season games.
The Cardinals have scored 200 points in their first five games this season -- Illinois State (51), Army (40), North Texas (27), Eastern Michigan (51) and Toledo (31) . . . The 200 points are the second most in school history in the first five games of a season . . . The 2008 team scored 207 points through its first five games and went on to finish the regular season with a 12-0 record.
Ball State scored 51 points vs. Illinois State and at Eastern Michigan, which marks only the second time in school history and the first time since 1965 the Cardinals have scored at least 50 points in two games in the same season.
Ball State ranks No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in passing offense (335.8) and No. 2 in scoring offense (40.0) . . . The Cardinals rank No. 2 in the league in scoring defense (24.0) . . . The Cardinals are 10th in the nation in passing offense and turnovers gained (12) . . . Ball State has recovered seven fumbles from opponents this year to lead the MAC and rank third in the nation.
The Cardinals scored all four of their touchdowns vs. Toledo on the ground . . . Ball State has scored nine rushing touchdowns over the past two games.
Junior running back Jahwan Edwards ran for three touchdowns vs. Toledo, marking the second straight game he has accomplished the feat.
Senior Keith Wenning is one of only two Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks in the country with at least 300 passing yards in five games this year . . . Sean Mannion of Oregon State is the only other quarterback to accomplish the feat in 2013 . . . Wenning ranks second in the country in passing yards (1,650) and sixth in passing yards per game (330.0).
Junior Willie Snead tallied seven catches for 131 yards vs. Toledo for his seventh career 100-yard receiving game . . . Jamill Smith finished the Toledo game with a team-high 11 catches for 99 yards . . . The 11 catches were a single game high for a Ball State player this season.
Ball State head coach Pete Lembo is 62-26 (.705) vs. conference opponents in his career . . . He owns a 10-3 record in season openers as the head coach at Lehigh, Elon and Ball State . . . Seven currrent NCAA Division I head coaches have reached nine or more wins at three different schools -- Pete Lembo, Ball State alum Brady Hoke, Dennis Franchione, Paul Johnson, Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer and Nick Saban . . .
