MUNCIE, Ind. - - For helping the Ball State women’s volleyball team open league play with sweeps at Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan last weekend, senior libero Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week.
The award marks the second time in the past three weeks Fredrich has been named the MAC West Division’s top defensive player, and the third straight honor for a Ball State player as redshirt sophomore Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) earned the title last week. Fredrich is now an eight-time career MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week honoree.
Fredrich put on a defensive clinic in helping guide the Cardinals to a 2-0 record to start MAC play last weekend, posting 7.67 digs per set and a perfect 1.000 (29-for-29) reception percentage. Her effort in the back court also helped limit BSU’s opponents to a combined .047 (51-40-232) attack percentage.
In the MAC-opening victory over EMU, Fredrich’s match-high 22 digs helped limit the Eagles’ attack to just 20 kills for the match and a .047 (20-15-106) attack percentage. She followed with a 24-dig effort at Central Michigan, helping limit the then-fourth-ranked MAC offense (at .243) to a .048 (31-25-126) rate of success.
With her match-best 24 digs in the sweep of CMU, Fredrich also moved into third place in program history with 1,661 career digs.
Fredrich and the rest of the Ball State women’s volleyball team return to action Thursday, when they travel to Toledo for a 7 p.m. showdown versus their MAC travel partner. The match is slated to be televised as part of the league’s new regional partnership with Time Warner Cable Sports and will be carried state-wide by Comcast Indiana.
