MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team secured its second shutout win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Vermont on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Bianca Velez scored two goals for the Cardinals while junior Tori Widrick was credited with three assists.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 5-4 on the season while Vermont drops to 0-9. Ball State's five wins are the most since the 2010 season when the Cardinals posted a 6-14 record.
Velez got Ball State on the board in the fifth minute off a penalty corner. Widrick fed the ball to sophomore Natalie Jardell who set up Velez. Sophomore Allie White would enter the game a few minutes later and made her presence known by scoring a goal in the 14th minute off an assist from Widrick.
Ball State would score its third goal in the same fashion as its first, off a penalty corner. The trio of Widrick, Jardell and Velez combined for the third goal of the game.
Ball State led an offensive furry with 21 shots on the day to Vermont’s five. Ball State also held the advantage in penalty corners 10-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Henley made one save on the day.
The Cardinals are back in action on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Central Michigan to open up MAC play. Ball State will face Michigan on Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
