MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men’s golf team continues its fall season this week at the Saint Mary’s Invitational in Monterey, Calif.
The tournament gets underway Monday and features 54 holes over two days at the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses. California, last year’s No. 1 team that won a record 12 tournaments, headlines a 19-team field that includes 10 top-100 teams from a year ago.
Each team will play both courses on Monday’s 36-hole day, and then Tuesday’s final round will be contested on the Bayonet course. The action is scheduled to start each day with an 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m. ET) shotgun start, and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
The Saint Mary’s Invitational is the third event of the season for Ball State, which placed sixth at the Northern Intercollegiate and 13th at last week’s Golfweek Conference Challenge.
Senior No. 1 golfer Tyler Merkel led the Cardinals with a tie for fifth place individually at the Golfweek event in Burlington, Iowa. The three-time All-Mid-American Conference selection owns a 72.17 stroke average this season. His career average of 73.40 is on pace for the school record.
Freshman Keegan McKinney will occupy the No. 2 spot in the lineup this week after a tie for 21st last week. McKinney closed with a 70 to finish at 1-over par for his three days at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The tournament field includes Akron, Ball State, California, Cal State Northridge, Florida Gulf Coast, Fresno State, Hawaii, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, NC State, Oregon, St. John’s, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
Ball State, California and Saint Mary’s were all in the field for last year’s NCAA Nationals in Atlanta.
