HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Ball State field hockey team earned a 2-0 win over Appalachian State on Monday, its first win of the 2013 season. Junior Tori Widrick and freshman Lexi Kavanaugh scored goals for the Cardinals.
With the win, Ball State moves to 1-1 on the season, while Appalachian State drops to 0-2.
Widrick got the Cardinals on the board in the ninth minute for her first goal of the season by dribbling in to the left side of the box. She finished the game with three shots.
Kavanaugh, who scored her first collegiate goal in Sunday’s game against James Madison. In the 59th minute the goalie was drawn out of the box and sophomore Bethany Han passed to Kavanaugh who was standing in front of the goal and fired a shot into the right side. Kavanaugh finished the game with six shots, three of them on goal.
Sophomore goalie Shelby Henley grabbed her first shutout of the season. The Novi, Mich., native had 11 saves. Ball State had one shutout in the 2012 season, a 3-0 win over Bellarmine on Oct. 28.
Appalachian State outshot Ball State 21-17 and secured 10 penalty corners to BSU’s five. Six Cardinals were credited with shots including freshman Colleen McGlynn, sophomores Allie White and Han and junior Jenna Rosenberry.
The Mountaineers were led by Caroline Phillips who had eight shots, three of which were on target. Goalie Sarah Anderson made seven saves.
Ball State will host Robert Morris and Colgate next weekend. Ball State will play Robert Morris at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, and Colgate at noon on Sunday, Sept. 8. Colgate and Robert Morris will square off on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
