MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State women’s swimming and diving head coach Kristy Castillo announced the team’s 2013-14 schedule Monday morning. The schedule includes six meets at the Lewellen Aquatic Center as well as two Big Ten teams.
“We are very excited for the season,” said Castillo. “We have added a lot of depth and versatility on both the swimming and diving side with the returning and incoming student-athletes.”
The team will hold its annual scrimmage on Oct. 12 before opening the season at home against MAC foe Ohio on Oct. 26. The team will then face Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., for a dual meet on Nov. 1 followed by a dual meet at Toledo on Nov. 2.
The Cardinals will return home to host Miami on Nov. 8 and the 10th annual Doug Coers Invitational Nov. 22-23. The team will wrap up 2013 with the Miami Invitational Dec. 5-7.
The new year opens up in Indianapolis where Ball State will take on IUPUI and Xavier on Jan. 10. The team will host Eastern Illinois on Jan. 18, before traveling to Ypsilanti, Mich., to take on Eastern Michigan and Ohio State on Jan. 25. The final tune-up before the MAC Championship will be against Buffalo on Senior Night on Feb. 1.
The MAC Championship will be held in Geneva, Ohio this season on Feb. 27-March 1.
For qualifying individuals, the NCAA Zone Diving meet will be held March 13-15 in Columbus, Ohio, while the NCAA Championships will run March 20-22 in Minneapolis.
“I feel confident our schedule will set up our student-athletes well in order to stay focused and ready to achieve what they want as a team,” said Castillo. “Adding two Big 10 teams (Michigan State and Ohio State), having some challenging conference match-ups as well our non-conference opponents will give the team a solid perspective on where they are with their training and learning how to race in preparation for our conference meet and post-season competition.”
Ball State will have a lot of experience returning to its roster in 2013-14. Seniors Bridgette Ruehl and Mallory Miles are both MAC Champions and members of the 2012-13 First Team All-MAC. Ruehl broke school records in the 100 and 200 breast that allowed her to qualify for the NCAA Championships in both events. Miles set school records last season in the 100 and 200 fly as well as the 200 IM. She was able to earn a NCAA B cut time in the 100 fly, where she won MAC gold. Miles finished in the top eight in the 200 fly at MAC and was a consolation finalist in the 200 IM.
Freshman diver Madie Zirzow had a stand out season earning a trip to the NCAA Zone competition. At the 2013 MAC Championship she was a consolation finalist on the 3M.
Several newcomers are looking to make an impact quickly for the team. Freshman Genevieve Hayes will add depth to the distance and backstroke events while Audrey Rodawig will be a key competitor in the butterfly unit and will help out with the sprints.
On the diving side, Ball State will welcome two student-athletes, Brittany Penn and Quinn Bixler.
The team will host the Red-White Intrasquad meet on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. Check ballstatesports.com for more news and information about Ball State women’s swimming and diving.
