Soccer To Open 2013 With Pair of Home Games

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team opens its 2013 season this weekend with a pair of home games at the Briner Sports Complex.

The Cardinals will welcome the Northern Iowa Panthers at 4:30 p.m. Friday and then remain at home to host the Green Bay Phoenix at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is free to all Ball State home soccer games. Live stats will be available at along with a streaming radio broadcast by Sports Link Radio on WCRD.

Ball State is looking to continue its climb under the direction of fourth-year head coach Craig Roberts. The Cardinals have improved in each of the previous three years, posting a winning record last fall at 8-7-5 overall and 5-3-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

This year's Ball State squad will have a new look after the departure of 10 seniors from a year ago and the addition of 13 newcomers. Four of those new players bring collegiate experience with them as transfers, and three of them -- Jenna Finke, Lauren Hall and Madison Oyer -- were enrolled for the spring season at Ball State.

Maimee Morris, Nicole Pembleton and Jasmine Moses highlight the group of returning players offensively, while the Cardinals will look to replace a core group of departed seniors on the back line.

Northern Iowa is coming off a 2012 season in which it posted an 8-9-2 overall record and finished in the top half of the Missouri Valley Conference race at 3-2-2 in league play. The Panthers return their leading scorer from last year in Charlotte Jones, who scored four goals.

Green Bay went 5-11-1 a year ago and 2-4-1 in the Horizon League. Hannah Kernan is the top returning offensive player for the Phoenix after scoring three goals in 2012.

Ball State will play four of the season’s first five games in Muncie, including another home weekend Sept. 6-8 with games against Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech. The Cardinals will then go on the road for the remainder of September.
