Football's Jonathan Newsome Named to Two Watch Lists
Jonathan Newsome, a senior defensive end on the Ball State football team, has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Ted Hendricks Award.
The Lombardi Award honors the nation’s top defensive lineman, while the Hendricks Award is for the top defensive end in college football. The Lombardi Award will be presented Dec. 11, at the Wortham Center in Houston, Texas, while the Hendricks Award will be announced Dec. 11.
Newsome joins teammates – Keith Wenning (Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback, Maxwell), Zane Fakes (Mackey Award), Jamill Smith (Hornung Award) and Willie Snead (Biletnikoff Award) -- on preseason national award watch lists for the 2013 season.
Newsome was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team after starting 10 games for the Cardinals in 2012. He tallied 52 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in his first season at Ball State. Newsome, who redshirted at Ball State in 2011, transferred from Ohio State after playing for the Buckeyes in 2009 and 2010.
Ball State opens the season, under the direction of third-year head coach Pete Lembo, with a Thurs., Aug. 29, home game at 7 p.m. at Scheumann Stadium.
