MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State men's golfer Tyler Merkel has qualified for the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

Merkel earned his spot through a qualifier over the weekend at Cambridge, a links style course in Evansville, Ind. The rising senior and Evansville native fired a two-round total of 137 to claim the lone berth out of the Cambridge site.

The Public Links Championship will be played July 15-20 at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.

Earlier this month, Merkel finished 15th at the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions. He was a first-team All-MAC and PING All-Region selection this spring for the second year in a row while helping Ball State to a spot in the NCAA Championships. His 73.57 career stroke average is ahead of school-record pace.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship was established in 1922 and is open to amateur golfers who are public-course players with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.

This is the second straight year a Ball State men's golfer has qualified for the Public Links. Brodie Williams earned a spot in last year's event.
