MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State University boasted high marks in the latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores released Tuesday by the NCAA.

Ball State had 89.5 percent of its teams (17 of 19) record multiyear averages of 965 or better, the second-highest percentage at that mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals also had 14 teams with scores better than the national Division I average of 974.

“While I'm happy with the progress many of our teams have made in competition over the past year, I'm even more pleased with the continued success our student-athletes have experienced in the classroom,” Ball State director of intercollegiate athletics Bill Scholl said.

“I'm thrilled so many of our student-athletes have taken advantage of the great education offered to them at Ball State. These latest scores reflect the commitment our entire athletics department and university have to developing well-rounded student-athletes.”

The APR numbers released Tuesday include data for the four-year period from 2008-09 through 2011-12. All 19 Ball State programs easily cleared the minimum APR standard for postseason eligibility, which is a 900 four-year average or a 930 average over the most recent two years.

Fourteen Ball State teams improved or maintained their four-year averages from a year earlier, highlighted by perfect multiyear scores of 1,000 for the women’s volleyball and cross country teams. Both of those programs were honored last week with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for averages ranking among the top 10 percent for their sports.

The women’s volleyball and cross country teams were two of 11 Ball State teams to post perfect single-year scores of 1,000 for 2011-12. They joined the men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, women’s swimming, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s indoor track, women’s outdoor track and men’s volleyball programs in that accomplishment.

Just like in the multiyear rates, 14 of Ball State’s 19 teams managed single-year scores in 2011-12 that were higher than or the same as the year before.

The men’s basketball team, which has been on a steady climb, posted a fourth consecutive year with a score of 957 or better. The team now owns a four-year score of 972, which is 20 points higher than the national average for men’s basketball.

Five other Ball State teams exceeded the multiyear average for their sports by double digits: women’s volleyball (1,000) by 20, cross country (1,000) by 17, women’s basketball (986) by 14, men’s tennis (987) by 13 and men’s swimming (988) by 12.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
