MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State women’s volleyball head coach Steve Shondell announced the team’s 31-match regular season schedule for the 2013 season which is highlighted by four pre-conference road tournaments.
“The 2013 schedule will be one of the most challenging schedules in the history of Ball State women’s volleyball,” said Shondell. “Opening the season with four consecutive tournaments on the road followed by three Mid-American Conference road matches will be a huge test for our team both mentally and physically. We are looking forward to playing against some of the top teams in the country and giving Ball State University great national exposure. We are very proud of the volleyball tradition at Ball State and hope to make more history this season.”
After playing most of its 2012 pre-conference slate close to home, the Cardinals will be on the road for a vast majority of the 2013 preseason, staring with a trip to Tampa, Fla., for the South Florida Tournament (Aug. 30-31). Ball State will also play in tournaments hosted by Minnesota (Sept. 6-7), Iowa (Sept. 13-14) and the College of Charleston (Sept. 20-21).
The Cardinals’ lone non-conference home matches will be versus instate rivals IPFW (Sept. 4) and IUPUI (Sept. 17).
Ball State opens its 16-match Mid-American Conference schedule by traveling to Eastern Michigan (Sept. 27) and Central Michigan (Sept. 28). Following a road game at Toledo (Oct. 3), the Cardinals will host three consecutive league matches starting Oct. 5 versus Buffalo.
The following weekend, which is Ball State’s homecoming, the Cardinals conclude their first tour through the MAC West Division as Western Michigan (Oct. 11) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 12) visit Worthen Arena.
Ball State will then play its next four matches versus MAC East Division foes, traveling to Kent State (Oct. 18) and Ohio (Oct. 19), before hosting Bowling Green (Oct. 25) and Miami (Oct. 26) to start a five-match home stand.
The Cardinals conclude their home stand with matches versus Central Michigan (Nov. 1), Eastern Michigan (Nov. 2) and Toledo (Nov. 7). Ball State closes the regular season with road matches at Akron (Nov. 9), Northern Illinois (Nov. 15) and Western Michigan (Nov. 16).
The 2013 MAC Tournament runs Nov. 22-24 at SPIRE, part of the GaREAT family, located in Geneva, Ohio. For the third consecutive season the top eight MAC teams advance to the tournament with the winner earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The 33rd Annual NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship begins Thursday, Dec. 5 at campus sites and concludes with the championship match Saturday, Dec. 21 at KeyArena in Seattle, Wash.
