MUNCIE, Ind. - Sophomore pitcher Scott Baker tied the Ball State (27-22, 14-11 MAC) baseball record for most wins in a season with his 11th win in the Cardinals 3-2 victory over Northern Illinois (21-31, 15-10 MAC) in Mid-American Conference action Thursday afternoon at Ball Diamond.

Baker is now 11-1 on the mound for the Cardinals.  The 11 win record in a season has been held since 2002 by former Ball State right-handed pitcher Bryan Bullington.

Baker pitched 9.0 innings giving up five hits while striking out two batters.  Anderson suffered the loss on the mound for the Huskies after 8.0 innings of work he gave up eight hits while striking out three.

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning.  The Huskies got on board first after Nate Ruzich singled to left field bringing home teammate Micah McCulloch.

After two scoreless innings in the third and fourth, Ball State tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Elbert Devarie singled to left center allowing Billy Wellman to cross the plate.  Wellman led off the inning with a single up the middle.

Northern Illinois answered in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 edge over the Cardinals.  Ball State was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth leaving two on base.

In the seventh inning, T.J. Weir started the inning off with a single.  Jarrett James would come into the game to pinch run for Weir.  Sam Tidaback got out after popping up to the catcher which brought up Elbert DeVarie.  DeVarie hit a single advancing James to third.  Wes Winkle's squeeze play was successful scoring in James to tie the game 2-2.

The Cardinals managed to hold off the Huskies in the top of eighth.  With one out in the bottom of the eighth Kevin Schlotter pinched hit and singled to right field to bring home Wellman.  Ball State would then take the 3-2 edge over Northern Illinois.  Wellman had reached base prior with a walk.

Ball State held off Northern Illinois defensively in the top of the ninth to win the ball game.

The Ball State baseball team continues Mid-American Conference play when it hosts Northern Illinois Friday at Ball Diamond.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
